If you have always wanted to know how the drug trade works, as I did, this eye-opening book takes us on a revealing romp through San Francisco, Marin County and Paris. The author's bio confirms that his life experiences are fodder for this intriguing novel. Meticiously plotted, this is a story of a man who is lured back into the trade by his infatuation for a beautiful woman. Darryl Robert Schoon's knowledge of food will entice any foodie to relish this appealing story. An added bonus--it keeps readers guessing--"How can this end?"

A spirited romp around Northern California, specifically the Bay area. Having been there, I could smell the ocean air, and feel the cool mist of the famous San Fransisco fog as you wonder, just 20 minutes ago I was in warm sunshine in Chinatown, now at the Golden Gate park it's 25 degrees cooler and really damp! It feels like you're in a different climatic zone, which in fact, you are.

I especially enjoyed the gastronomic adventures as the story unfolds. There were times when my mouth was watering, and I had to get up to get something to eat, although it was quite a bit pedestrian compared to the treats he was describing. It make me think that the next time I head to San Fran I'll reference the book to see if I can find some of those restaurant gems.

The story itself is nicely paced, and the intrigue builds with little twists and turns. Having read his book, "Light In A Dark Place", you know that he speaks from experience about the counter culture drug scene out in Cali. What I found particularly interesting was his comments about the integrity and sense of brotherhood displayed by these "outside the limits" business people (although of an "illegal" nature)and his biting commentary regarding the cut-throat activities of the "normal" business community. Sure, there's an occasional murder here and there, but-- hey!, people get shot in supermarkets and the post office all the time!

So you wonder-- will he get involved? Will he get the girl (at least a little piece)? All in all, I found this an entertaining fun ride. Write more novels Darryl!

The author takes us on a wild ride few people know from the inside - the world of drug dealers. He lets us know he was recently released from prison in San Francisco where he served 10 years on a drug charge and now wants to live fully. He writes in such a way I did not want to put the book down, and am waiting to see a movie made (with Lou Diamond Phillips as the protagonist).

It is a tangled web of intrigue, with romanance and adventure placed in present times, seasoned with a culinary, gastronomic background. He interweaves politics with philosophy such as "silence is where real healing is done" or "commerce is a direct function of profit". The Universe tests us to see how far we are willing to go to sell our soul.

His writing allows the reader to be in the same place and time with the protagonist. He drops hints of what may come, searching for the good life, aware of fate. What keeps us from finding what we want, do we let fear stop us, do we follow greed? This is all intertwined through the background of the Bay Area, both physically and gastronomically in a poetic way.

This book is a refreshing look at the Bay Area. The adventures begin with a beautiful woman named Pamela Huntington. The protagonist and his drug smuggling cohorts are seen eating and drinking exotic delicacies at fabulous restaurants.

When unsure which way to turn when the deal shifts, they turn to the I Ching for some words of ancient wisdom. There are some treacherous twists and turns to the story. The danger continues according to the I Ching.
Does he get the girl? Does he get busted? You are going to want to read this fast paced book to find out more. It is highly recommended as a good read.
