BOOK OF THE DAY: Escape From Ruskin Heights by Dana George

by Dana George

BOOK DESCRIPTION
Carey O'Neal is Making New Friends - Each and Every One Dead

For this Kansas City Realtor, there is no escaping the ghosts of her past.

When Carey O’Neal left the old Kansas City neighborhood she vowed never to return. There is nothing for her in Ruskin Heights but painful memories, humiliation, and a deep sense of not belonging. She manages to build a new life in Chicago, a place where no one knows about Ruskin Heights and where she is able to forget about the girl she once was.

Life seems to conspire against Carey as a broken marriage, job loss, and injured mother force her back to Kansas City. She takes the only job available to her, selling real estate in the broken neighborhood she’d fought so hard to escape. She begins to question her own sanity as she meets new friends ”" each and every one dead.

As these new “friends” insist on becoming part of Carey’s life, she must decide whether to leave for good, or stay to face the ghosts of Ruskin Heights.

AUTHOR BIO

As a former newspaper and magazine reporter, Dana George became a traditionally published author for the first time in 2004. It is her eye for historical detail and regional ambiance that has attracted new readers.
As the daughter of history buffs, George spent a great deal of her childhood visiting historical sites. While other families traveled to Disneyland, hers headed to Gettysburg or some obscure 19th century homestead. It was impossible for George to stand in the spot where a battle once raged, treaty was signed, or everyday people lived a hardscrabble life without feeling their essence.

Being ever-so-practical, she graduated from college with a degree in business. Still, George kept her hand in history and the paranormal by writing about them and by dragging her own children to long-forgotten ghost towns and sometimes-stuffy presidential libraries. Her hope was that her sons would learn that history is never about the place, but about the people who once lived there.

She is married to the sweet guy she first met in high school history class. In addition to two sons, they have two amazing daughters-in-law and a dreamy granddaughter.

REVIEWS
5.0 out of 5 stars A fast, fun & thrilling read. September 5, 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
First off, I'm from the Kansas City area and still live here. This book takes place in Kansas City and that of course makes it appealing for a lifelong resident. I also am a Realtor as is the main character in this book and that too plays a role in my complete enjoyablility. However, with these fun facts set aside the book is truly a great read for anyone. The character development is good and the storyline has plenty of action to keep you interested and rooting for certain characters. Reading Escape From Ruskin Heights is just an absolute pleasure. There's drama, action and fun too! The interaction between paranormal spirits and "regular" people is on a level I've not seen before in a book and ads a totally different dynamic to the genre. I highly recommend this book to everyone and have bought extra copies to hand out to friends and family!

This was a fantastic quick read that keeps you going faster to put all these pieces together! Dana does a great job of bringing the reader in the location and weaving you into the history of the city of Kansas City while finding a love for each spirit she brings to the page. I can't wait for the next installment in this series.
