BOOK DESCRIPTION
"Everyone in the world has a Spark, a light inside that guides them, keeps them alive.”

Myxini School for Children specializes in training young men and women who have powerful Sparks. Strikers are taught to manipulate fire. Trackers learn to find animals in the most formidable terrains. Handlers are instructed in communication with large predators. But forty years have passed since the last time they had a Reader – a student with the ability to read minds.

When Lark Davies enrolls at Myxini, he knows there aren’t many like him, but he doesn’t realize just how rare his abilities really are. He thinks nothing of being asked to keep his Spark a secret; after all, he can barely control it. Thoughts and emotions flood unbidden into his mind until he can scarcely walk or hold a conversation. But just when he needs it most, his ability fails him.

Lark meets Khea, a small frightened girl who mysteriously incites his protective nature. He has no explanation for the curious strength of their relationship, and it doesn’t help that she is one of the few people in the world whose thoughts can’t be read. As he struggles to get to the root of their unique bond, Lark begins to unravel more power than even his mentor expected, but in the process makes himself a target to political leaders eager to take control.Edited by Joshua Allen Mercier. REVIEWS
5.0 out of 5 stars Grand tale of adventure December 14, 2013By StormRuneFormat:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase Sparks is an impressive first work from a new writer. The story revolves around a boy, Lark, who agrees to leave his poor family in order to provide medicine for his dying mother. He is transported to Mynixi, a school for children such as he who have a "spark" or a special ability. Lark's special ability is to read the minds of others, but his ability is untrained - and at times its funny the issues he has because of this special ability. Lark must pass 10 rounds of various training in order to graduate, but his mentor, Avis, is bent initially on pushing him out of the program. Along the way, Lark develops deep friendships, finds love and battles political intrigue, all while growing his spark. The story is creative as well as complex. It's a grand tale of adventure - one that you'll have a hard time putting down. 5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't Put It Down! I finished it in a day.A brilliant new fantasy concept, intelligent writing, and the author's innate story-telling ability combined to produce a tale that I could not get enough of.Lark is such a creative protagonist, and I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know him and see him grow and change. His goodness and determination to succeed make him such a loveable character. The world-building in this novel is superb, without being overly wordy. I had no problem imagining the lands McCoy describes. This book was absolutely excellent, and I cannot wait for the sequel!
