BOOK OF THE DAY: Eye of the Moonrat by Trevor H. Cooley

by Trevor H. Cooley

BOOK DESCRIPTION
Justan was raised on the outskirts of the Dremaldrian Battle Academy. He watched his father ascend the ranks within the academy to become one of the most respected warriors in the kingdom. The only thing he has ever wanted is to become an academy student and follow the path of his father. Unfortunately, only the best can enter the academy and Justan is a horrible fighter. Everyone tells him that he is more suited to scholarly work than swordplay. In desperation he hurls himself into training, eager to overcome the doubters and walk into the academy triumphant, unaware that secretive powers plot to disrupt his plans.

Meanwhile, an evil wizard of immense power is using magic to twist the bodies of the creatures of the land and transform them into monsters. With these creatures and the peoples of the wilds, he is building an army . . .

Ogres and dragons, warriors and wizards are destined to clash, their fates guided by The Bowl of Souls.

Eye of the Moonrat is book one of The Bowl of Souls series.

Book Two: Messenger of the Dark Prophet
Book Three: Hunt of the Bandham

AUTHOR BIO

I was born in South Carolina and have lived all around the United states. Utah, New Mexico, Michigan and Tennessee.

I started reading novels in second grade and my love of Fantasy started with Lloyd Alexander's Chronicles of Prydain series. I couldn't get enough, continued with David Eddings, Tolkein, Robert Jordan. All I wanted was to become a published writer.

The characters and concepts that eventually became the Bowl of Souls series started in my teens. I wrote short stories, kept notebooks full of ideas, and generally dreamed about my world constantly. There were several attempts at starting a novel over the years.

Not long after I was married, my wife told me to stop talking about the story and write it down. Here I am, many years and rewrites and submissions and rejection letters later finally putting the books on Amazon.

The Bowl of Souls series is:
Book One, Eye of the Moonrat (cover design by Justin Cooley)
Book Two, Messenger of the Dark Prophet (cover design by Sarah Alderete)
Book Three, Hunt of the Bandham (cover design by Justin Cooley)
Book Four: upcoming
Book Five: upcoming

I am also currently working on a contemporary fantasy novel about a wizard ripped from the world of the Bowl of Souls series and thrust into our world. It is tentatively titled: Tallow Jones, Wizard Detective.

I currently live in Idaho with my wife and four children.

REVIEWS
5.0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! October 10, 2012

First off, I don't give reviews to books that I dislike. I seldom give reviews except for books that I thoroughly enjoy. This series is a real gem. I am a hardcore sci-fi fantasy fan, and have read hundreds if not thousands of fantasy books by many, many authors from R.A. Salvatore to like George R.R. Martin since I was a kid.

For readers like myself, I highly recommend this book. Most sci-fi fantasy books are composed of your typical hero, a villain, typical races like elves, dwarves, globlins, giants, trolls, etc. Once you read a few, you understand that most fall into that category. Sometimes, you'll find ones that steer away from that but seldom. It bothers me when people say that something is predictable or nothing new or something along those lines. I believe those comments come from readers who are not true fantasy fans because perhaps, they don't understand. Yes, this is about a coming of age boy who is the hero in this story. Yes, that's predictable. It's like saying that human existence is a cycle of birth, growing and dying. That's obvious. What's not obvious is every hero in any book has his/her own story. The story of how the hero becomes the hero is what people like myself want to read about. Yes, I can predict that he will have some kind of amazing powers in fighting and/or magical abilities, will perform some amazing feats, and will thwart the villain in some way. And YES, it's about coming of age. I get it. And for those of you who rips a book apart about typos or grammatical errors are just a bit too "anal". Argh...Good grief, you pay almost close to nothing for a book published by a self-publisher. What are you griping about? There are almost close to nil in grammatical errors and only very few minor spelling errors in all three books in this series. The operative words are VERY FEW MINOR and easily overlooked and will not detract from the story at all.

The hero in this series reminds me a lot of The Name of The Wind by Patrick Rothfuss and The Black Prism by Brent Weeks. They are all lovable in their own distinct ways. Those of you like myself will recognize those books as well if not already huge fans. The Name of The Wind is an amazing book except the sequel was very disappointing. You will not be disappointed with this series. Every book is adventure packed and every character is likable and memorable. Thank you for the slow moments in the story otherwise I would completely stop breathing. I truly love this series. I could not stop reading, and my life just was on hold until I completed the third book. If you want to read a great adventure, this is it. Don't get bogged down by the nitty gritty like things that I've mentioned above. Please give this series a try with an open mind. For those fantasy fans out there, don't miss out. There is finesse in the battle scenes, not just your straight forward dark and grueling gore of slash and bash. The villain is less evil and dark nor the style of writing is like The Scion of Abacus or Waylander or The Warded Man. Those are a bit more dark. This villain is more maniacally silly. All villains are a bit silly to me. The hero is very likable. I adore him and all the other characters in this series.

For those haters who say that the five star reviews are paid, wow, really?! Please move along and write a positive review about something you like. You're holding up the line.

To the author, I cannot wait for the fourth book. I will definitely purchase the rest of the series and will be passing this on to my friends and family.
