BOOK OF THE DAY: Peace Warrior by Steven L. Hawk

by Steven L. Hawk

BOOK DESCRIPTION

It’s the mid-21st century when Sergeant First Class Grant Justice is killed during an ambush on an enemy tank column.

Six hundred years later, his body is retrieved from the frozen, arctic lake where he perished. Re-animated by a team of scientists, Grant awakens to a civilization that has abolished war. A civilization that has outlawed violence and cherishes Peace above all else. A civilization that has been enslaved by an alien race called the Minith.

Grant is humankind’s final hope against the alien menace. He must be the... Peace Warrior.

I read on average 2 (usually free) kindle books from the sci-fi genre each week.

This one has been one of the best. An original plot, with very good descriptive writing. Detailed enough, but not overly so, so as to be tedious.

Great book.

Sure, a typo here or there, but nothing glaring as far as editorial errors.
I'll definitely be buying the next in the trilogy.

I enjoyed reading all three books. SFC Justice is pretty much a typical Ranger NCO. If you've never worked with The Rangers, you won't know what I am talking about, but stay with me here. First, Ranger Hawk has written a believable and fast-paced book about a future Earth (in essence a future USA where Political Correctness has gone to the nth degree). The recovery and rehabilitation of SFC Justice turns the entire world society on it's head. There is plenty of blood and guts for those who want to read about that, and plenty of testosterone among both the men and women "Violents". What was interesting to me was the slick integration of the inclusion of gay men and women into the plot as part of the "secret Army". Very interesting touch, considering what the US Military has gone through with the Don't Ask, Don't Tell foolishness and the homophobia espoused by the military leadership over the past 3 generations. How soon they forget that the Spartans almost all had a "partner". If you've read your Thucydides and others of that era, you really, really wouldn't want to be captured or surrender to the Spartans as they were ferocious warriors. Enough said about that, draw your own conclusions; I already have drawn mine years ago when I worked with some outstanding gay soldiers both male and female during my 30 years of US Army service. The social interaction between the Peace Mantra folks and the Violents is an interesting dynamic, especially when they start to turn around and realize that you will never win a war with lick-spittle apologists and a cringing, bowing President. Ahh, but I wax political, don't I? OK, back on target ... the stories should be read together, one after the other as did I; also the lesson learned about "Trust" and "Loyalty of the Defeated in Battle" (no more intel of that since it would be a spoiler) is prophetic and historically accurate. Take a gander at the history of the USA and our many defeated foes and see which countries are now our strongest economic and military partners. Nothing like a good ass-kicking to get their attention -- then you offer your hand in friendship and assistance and get them back on their feet in the correct direction. The future history of a world tired of war and "violence" resonates in today's' culture, particularly when we as a Constitutional and Judeao-Christian society are facing the greatest threat we have ever faced. The Imperial Nipponese Kama-Kazi were pikers compared to what we face to today. SFC Justice and his buddies, both male and female, make a hopeful move to get things together again on Earth, and I wouldn't be surprised that strong and lasting alliances are formed between the various adversaries -- all in the name of interstellar Capitalism, of course. It has been a few years since the last time I went out the door of a C-130 on a static line, but I would do it again in a heartbeat assuming the VA Medical Center could comp me with a set of those legs. Oh yeah, and a hot alien girl too. Please read this series even if you cringe when the word "g u n" is said in your Peaceful Presence and learn a few things about being a Leader and a Soldier.
