BOOK OF THE DAY: The Jonas Trust Deception by AFN Clarke

by AFN Clarke

BOOK DESCRIPTION
The Jonas Trust Deception, another Thomas Gunn thriller by bestselling author AFN Clarke, follows The Orange Moon Affair, a "hard to put down", "5-star novel by a 5-star author". Thomas (ex-Special Forces) goes on high alert after a desperate message from his journalist friend, Morgan. She's in danger. But where? And why? Rushing to her ranch he finds it being torn apart by a female assassin of East European descent, with a mysterious butterfly tattoo on her neck. An image that sends his mind reeling. Dread seeping into his soul.

Has Morgan uncovered something even more explosive than the Orange Moon conspiracy?  If so, her enemies will want both her and her information destroyed. Racing to follow tangled leads, Thomas and his girlfriend Julie are thrust into the deadly path of Mexican drug cartels, corrupt politicians, unscrupulous financial brokers like Jonas T Purdue, the FBI, the UK intelligence services and their arch nemesis Marika Keskküla. What deception binds these unlikely "players" together? And what's the connection to a secret mission in Afghanistan, that Thomas has tried so hard to forget?

Outraged by the feeling of constantly being "played", Thomas decides to take an action so shocking and unexpected, that even his team fear he's lost his mind. Has he? Or can he strike at the heart of the conspirators forever?

"Like The Orange Moon Affair...a fantastic, all-absorbing read...classy, complex and cunningly compelling." 5 Stars, Thalia.

"One of the first thrillers I've ever read that wasn't packed with cliches, stock characters and hackneyed plot turns...a genuinely thrilling novel...you won't be able to put it down...this book does more than entertain, it intoxicates." 5 Stars, Veritas Vincit "Bill".

"Edge of your seat material. AFN Clarke is a powerful force in the thriller genre..." 5 Stars, John Staughton.

This is a hard-hitting, no-punches pulled, riveting thriller in the great tradition of Jason Bourne and James Bond. My first encounter with the Thomas Gunn series, I couldn't immediately help making comparisons with other like thriller-agents (as previously mentioned) though I was relieved to note that at least the initials of our protagonist here were not J.B. ( as per Jason Bourne, James Bond, Jack Bauer etc.).

Before even conducting any research on the author AFN Clarke it was plainly obvious to me that here was an individual who knew his stuff from having been in the game. The way the author described the various types of equipment mentioned in this book from aircraft to weapons it made me, the reader feel, as if I possessed that knowledge personally.

The author's solid handle on description does not merely end with equipment it pretty much encompasses everything else. This is a thriller that immerses the reader into its ambience such that when the author describes a place you are there, when he describes an event you're part of it. Plainly put, this is more of a show-not-tell saga, much in the vein of a screenplay (albeit with a lot more detail). When a character is ambushed and blasted away I like to picture in my mind's eye how it all goes down...and this thriller doesn't disappoint.

Encompassing Latin mafia gangs, all-powerful and super-secretive lettered government agencies as well as a slew of off-the-beaten-track, colorful characters, there truly is never a dull moment in this read. AFN Clarke knows precisely how to pace his story, choosing just the right moment to give the reader some breathing space before riling them up for the next adrenaline shot of action.

All in all this is an excellent page-turner that does not disappoint and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a jolly rollicking time!

5.0 out of 5 stars Suspense at its best October 7, 2013

The `Jonas Trust Deception' is the second installment in AFN Clarke's Thomas Gunn thriller series. Once again, we join Thomas Gunn and his girlfriend Julie, in a dangerous game of cat and mouse, where the stakes are high...for wherever Gunn goes, `trouble, death and destruction' follow him. Like its prequel, `The Orange Moon Affair', this novel is a fantastic, all-absorbing read. You will find it difficult to put down once you've started, so make sure you have a few hours of uninterrupted time to enjoy the ride!

Although classed as a military/spy thriller, this book will appeal to a wide audience, with underlying themes that are realistic and very relevant to the world we live in today. For how often has it been suggested that globalization has enabled a powerful few to control the masses, creating a world system of financial control, able to dominate the political system of each and every country and the economy of the world as a whole? Terrifying, if those select few are experts in abusing their power, and it is this deadly game of `Big Brother' that Gunn finds himself immersed in, in this suspenseful, riveting read that will have you guessing till the very end. For can Gunn win this dangerous game of `global three dimensional chess', when he's up against formidable agencies, cartels and consortiums?

Clarke is an expert in his field, easily building suspense with an air of mystery, carefully allowing the reader to put certain pieces of the puzzle together but never disclosing the missing links before delivering a thrilling climactic finish. Cleverly, and no doubt purposely, even the novel's titles give little away, engaging the reader from the get-go to indulge and uncover.

If the first two installments are anything to go by, the third book in the Thomas Gunn thriller series, `The Bonefish Run Conspiracy', is sure to be another ripper. Another top-notch read; the Jonas Trust Deception is classy, complex and cunningly compelling.
