Hero Born: Project Solaris by Chris Fox

I'm insignificant, really.  I am a techy, who writes software for a small company in San Francisco.  But that's not all that defines who I am.  I harbor a dark secret, one I live with every day of my life.  I was abducted nearly seven years ago and I know it's only a matter of time before it happens again, not only to me but to others who are just like me.  We'll be ready this time and we won't let them take us without a fight.

BOOK OF THE DAY: Slaughterbend's Way by Von Krome

by Von Krome

BOOK DESCRIPTION
Doctor Becky Shannon is a brilliant nuclear physicist who may very well be able to avert Earth's catastrophic energy crisis and the Second Great Depression it was spawning. But when a stray asteroid turns out to be a spaceship that descends over North America, everything changes.

The event triggers global hysteria and propels the world toward economic and social collapse. Mayor John Anders not only has to deal with the loss of his fiance Becky Shannon, but gets unwillingly drawn into the government's attempt to find out what it is the aliens want with Earth. When a second alien ship arrives, there seems to be only one plausible way to avoid a fate that has already destroyed hundreds of planets.

Excerpt

John had rushed home yesterday afternoon after the sky lit up and his conversation with Becky was cut short. When he first turned the television on he had no signal, though within the hour some local service returned. Video transmitted by low-flying Royal Canadian Air Force pilots before they crashed didn’t show much but the satellite images sure did. While the images of the alien spaceship were stunning, all he could think about was Becky. He had gotten sick several times and was in the process of making himself a drink when he noticed the message on his answering machine.

“John. John. Are you there? This is Andy. I tried to get Becky to come with me, John. I tried so hard, but she wouldn’t listen. She was talking to someone but there was nobody there. She was saying something about radiation and not hurting people. I didn’t understand all of it. I could feel some kind of vibration in the air but I didn’t hear any voices. Anyway, I think it came right down on top of her, John. I’m so sorry. The Canadian Armed Forces are here. The RCAF is taking me someplace for questioning. I have to go. Bye.”

John hit the play button again. He’d already listened to the message dozens of times but he kept playing it over and over again. He didn’t want to believe what he was hearing. Each time he played it he listened for something he might have missed. It was bad enough that Becky was going to be away from him every week. Losing her forever was more than he could handle.

REVIEWS
4.0 out of 5 stars Like I stepped into Twilight Zone, May 19, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Slaughterbend's Way (Kindle Edition)
I'll start with what I enjoyed: I love sci-fi. This wasn't like rereading the same book as the last. I enjoyed reading it and every time I had to venture away was still thinking about what will happen to the town, to the country, to Becky? Very Twilight Zone type of feel. I could actually picture this in black & white and those TZ type of actors.

What I think needs to change: More detail. Explain the bombs, maybe get into the background of the main characters better, the characters of the town, the background of the aliens. Easy read-challenge the reader more. I guess in other words, I wanted it to be longer. So not much of a complaint there. (But I'm used to long, long, descriptive King books myself).
Thanks for letting me venture into your brain ;)
